Topic Analysis For A Change For The Better (PSLE 2023 Paper 1, Composition)

( • ̀ω•́ )✧

As teachers at Writers' Guild, we have always taken pride in the fact that we go the extra mile to equip our students with our marvellous in-house techniques, complimentary classes and materials, as well as ensuring that their story plots 𝓼𝓽𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓸𝓾𝓽 𝓯𝓻𝓸𝓶 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓬𝓻𝓸𝔀𝓭.

♡⸜(˶˃ ᵕ ˂˶)⸝♡

When we heard about some of the plotlines that our students generated in the span of 50 minutes, we could not help but 𝓶𝓪𝓻𝓿𝓮𝓵 𝓲𝓷 𝓪𝔀𝓮. They certainly knocked it out of the park! Not only did they manage to effectively delve into the theme, they also generated 𝓹𝓵𝓸𝓽 𝓽𝔀𝓲𝓼𝓽𝓼 that 𝓫𝓵𝓮𝔀 𝓸𝓾𝓻 𝓼𝓸𝓬𝓴𝓼 𝓸𝓯𝓯!

______________

🎯 Lucas, inspired by the 𝗹𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗽 picture, penned a story about:

A father, often frustrated with his son's apparent gaming obsession, frequently reprimanded him for his distractions. This led to constant misunderstandings and clashes between them. The unexpected twist? The son was deeply engrossed in a project directly related to the games he was playing. Upon this revelation, the father committed to understanding his son better and vowed to become a more supportive parent.

🎯 Yi Hui, drawing from the same 𝗹𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗽 imagery, crafted a tale about:

A cyberbully, who, after a stern reprimand from the principal, underwent a transformation. Moving past remorse, he not only extended apologies to his victims but also courageously defended another student from the school's infamous bully.

🎯 Jing En, inspired by the 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘆 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 illustration, wove a narrative about:

The main character was a perennially disorganised young woman. On the day of a much-anticipated overseas trip with her family, her chaotic room swallowed up her passport. Amidst the ensuing panic, even though she eventually found the passport, the family tragically missed their flight. This tumultuous event spurred her on a personal journey of change, leading her to embrace tidiness and organisation.

What does it take to achieve a triumph for the topic of "𝘼 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧?" Consider these guiding questions to craft a compelling story:

✅ What did not seem right at first?

✅ Which change seemed to be needed?

✅ Did you introduce pivotal characters that illuminate the theme and propel the plot forward?

✅ What was the catalyst for the change? What resulting strong emotions did the main character experience?

✅ How did the metamorphosis affect the main character? Did you highlight the stark contrast of before and after?

✅ Which potent values emerged through the story?

✅ Is the core message linked to the given topic? Did your conclusion encapsulate the core message powerfully?

In addition, we have pinpointed some 𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙨 from this year's PSLE in the context of "A Change For The Better":

❌ Absence of captivating characters driving the narrative

❌ Overemphasis on the event that triggers the change

❌ Delaying the transformation until the end of the story

❌ Neglecting to incorporate any actual transformation despite the theme's focus on change.

❌ Missing out on conveying a profound lesson or value.
